There is just over a month left to go for Diwali. And as is usual every year, I have embarked on an expedition to give my house a fresh new look for the festival. Not because I have a raft of parties scheduled – no, I am not a great one for entertaining – but because I like to use this festival as an excuse to spring clean (okay, autumn clean, if you want to be pedantic about it) and refresh my own surroundings. If that sounds like a daunting prospect, rest assured that it isn’t. I believe in achieving the…

A month ago my friend, Khushnooma Kapadia, marketing supremo at Marriott Hotels, asked me to come to the JW Marriott Golfshire and speak to Marriott general managers about my experiences at hotels. Then, last week, Richa Sharma, who looks after communications for ITC Hotels (whom I have nicknamed Speedy because of her super-efficient ways) asked me to do much the same thing for ITC general managers at Delhi’s Maurya Hotel.I enjoyed both conversations, though I have no idea how bored the poor general managers were, having to listen to my telling them stuff they probably already knew. But on the grounds…

From the outside, India’s indie film world seems impossibly glittery. Last month , Theja Rio’s debut feature Angh, in Nagaland’s tribal Konyak language, won the Platform Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Rio’s tale of an old headman and his son holding on to ancestral faith in the wake of change, is now in competition for an International Feature Film Oscar.Meanwhile, filmmaker Payal Kapadia, whose 2024 film All We Imagine As Light, about two nurses in Mumbai, won the Grand Prix at Cannes, has more reason to cheer. She is among the 10 winners (the only Indian, the…

In India, the video games that command attention are usually the blockbuster action and combat ones. First-person shooter (FPS) games make up more than half of the market. And the gaming stereotype: A dude locked in with the bros, playing Call of Duty or Fortnite, rings true. So, Supantha Paul, 25, founder of LavaPoint Studios, was surprised to see games about grief, loss and mental health presented at the India Game Showcase in June. The online event is organised by Nodwin Gaming in partnership with Los Angeles’s Summer Game Fest. It featured Fishbowl, a story about a young adult dealing with…

So much happens in the world of robotics that the World Humanoid Robot Games held in Beijing in August already feels like a lifetime ago. What we remember though are the LOLs. A humanoid robot lifts a barbell. Seconds later, it lurches forward unsteadily and goes down face-first like a house of cards, its hands flailing helplessly. Two officials scoop it up by the arms and legs and carry it off the exact way you’d carry a person on a stretcher.Another robot busts some genuinely impressive dance moves — it has the rhythm down, the swagger en pointe. Until it…

So humbled. Madonna has revealed that Sabrina Carpenter’s team ghosted her, forcing her to DM Sabrina herself to make their Bring Your Love collab happen. Awkward. But we remember how Madonna went after Lady Gaga repeatedly, calling her “reductive” and a “blatant rip-off” 15 years ago. The tables have a funny way of turning.Feeling our age. Because John Green is writing for grown-ups now. Hollywood, Ending comes nearly a decade after the 2017 YA drama Turtles All the Way Down. It follows two young actors cast in an Andy Warhol biopic, who get into a relationship and have to deal…
