Having gold jewellery is more than just an accessory, but an investment for a lifetime. However, not all gold ages the same way. A piece made in 9KT or 14KT, the two purities behind most lightweight, everyday jewellery, carries a higher share of alloy metals such as copper, silver and zinc. That’s what gives it the strength to hold fine, delicate designs, but it also makes it more reactive to air, moisture, sweat and everyday chemicals than higher karat gold. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Trisha Paul, head of merchandising at KISNA Diamond and Gold Jewellery, breaks down what this means in practice.
Step 1: Store it with extra care
According to Trisha Paul, these alloys tarnish or dull faster than higher karat gold if left in a humid space. A dry, lined box with separate compartments is essential, and a silica gel sachet or anti-tarnish strip tucked inside slows this down considerably. “Diamonds are tougher than most stones and metals, so they can scratch gold if pieces touch, which means the two should never share a compartment,” added Trisha. Close every clasp before storing a piece, and give chains and earrings their own space.
