A hair spa is often recommended as a quick fix for dry, frizzy or damaged hair, but does it actually help with hair fall? Celebrity hairstylist Amit Thakur, who has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Nita Ambani, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt, often shares valuable hair care insights with his Instagram family. In an August 11 Instagram post, he explained what the popular salon treatment can and cannot do for your hair and scalp. (Also read: Grey hair in your 20s, poor memory in your 30s? Hair spa can help with frizz, but doesn’t alter hair structure
“A hair spa is actually a multi-step treatment that nourishes your scalp and your hair. Salons say that it helps with frizz and yes, it could temporarily fix your frizz problem,” Amit said.
Unlike treatments such as keratin or hair botox, a hair spa does not permanently alter the natural structure of the hair. “I prefer a hair spa over any of the treatments like keratin or botox because it does not alter the structure of your hair,” he explained.
Does hair spa actually help with hair fall
However, when it comes to hair fall, the benefits of a hair spa may be limited. “When we talk about hair fall, hair spa does not have a huge impact on it,” Amit said.
According to the hairstylist, the deep cleansing involved in a hair spa can help maintain a healthier scalp, which may support healthier hair over time. “The scalp is cleaned deeply in these treatments, which in return can promote healthier hair over the period of time,” he added.
But a hair spa should not be considered a treatment for hair loss itself. “However, it’s important to note that it does not target the underlying causes of hair fall that you may be experiencing,” Amit said.
While a hair spa can therefore help improve the look, feel and manageability of the hair, persistent or excessive hair fall may require identifying and addressing its underlying cause rather than relying solely on salon treatments.
