Rising Covid cases: Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi register sharp increase | India News

NEW DELHI: India is once again registering a surge in Covid cases signalling the possible beginning of the third wave.
The daily Covid cases in the country has increased sharply from 6,531 on December 27, 2021 (Monday) to 16,764 on December 31 (Friday).
There are at present 96,204 active cases in the country.

This spike has been led by the increase in Covid numbers in several major cities.
Mumbai, once again, is leading the table with a sharp rise in Covid numbers. The city administration has imposed new curbs including a ban on all gatherings from 5pm to 5am till January 15.
Kolkata and Delhi have also shown significant increase in cases.
In South, Chennai and Bengaluru are registering noticeable jump in cases, leading to new curbs.
Here’s a look at the numbers in five major cities.

Meanwhile, the Omicron cases in the country are also spreading fast, with most of the states now reporting the presence of the new “variant of concern.”

The first two cases of Omicron in the country were reported on December 2 in Karnataka. There has been a steady increase in the cases since then.
The government started reporting the total Omicron cases from December 21, 2021. On December 31, 2021 the total Omicron cases in the country was 1,271.
This number is likely to rise significantly in the coming days with both Mumbai and Delhi indicating that the bulk of new cases could be of the new variant.
