India logs 16,764 new Covid-19 cases, 220 deaths; Omicron tally at 1270 | India News

NEW DELHI: India logged 16,764 new Covid cases, a little over 27% than yesterday, while the active cases rose to 91,361,according to the Union health ministry data updated on Friday.

There are 1270 Omicron cases in India with 23 states reporting the new Covid-19 strain. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state with 450 cases followed by Delhi, which has 320 infections.

The daily rise in Covid-19 cases crossed the 16,000 mark after around 64 days taking India’s total tally of Covid-19 cases to 3,48,38,804,
The death toll climbed to 4,81,080 with 220 fresh fatalities according to the data updated at 8 am.

India, on Thursday recorded what could be its first Omicron death as the highly infectious variant spread to two more states, Punjab and Bihar, and recorded highest single-day infections.
The active cases comprise 0.26 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate is at 98.36 per cent, the health ministry said.
An increase of 8,959 cases has been recorded in the active Covid-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.34 per cent. It has been less than 2 per cent for last 88 days.
The weekly positivity rate was also recorded at 0.89 per cent. It has been below 1 per cent for the last 47 days, according to the health ministry.
The testing capacity across the country continues to be expanded. The last 24 hours saw a total of 12,50,837 tests being conducted. India has so far conducted over 67.78 crore (67,78,78,255) cumulative tests.
Meanwhile more than 150.66 crore (1,50,66,89,775) vaccine doses have been provided to States/UTs so far through Govt. of India (free of cost channel) and through direct state procurement category and more than 16.94 crore (16,94,15,866) balance and unutilized Covid vaccine doses are still available with the States/UTs to be administered.
Moreover with the administration of 66,65,290 vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s Covid-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 144.54 crore (1,44,54,16,714) as per provisional reports till 7 am today. This has been achieved through 1,54,27,550 sessions.
