Muslim students must not be forced to do ‘Surya Namaskar’, says AIMPLB | India News

LUCKNOW: Expressing serious objection over the Centre’s directive to organise ‘Surya Namaskar’ event in schools across the country to mark the 75-year celebrations of India’s Independence, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Tuesday said that it was a form of worshiping the Sun whereas Islam only permit worshiping the Almighty. The board said students should be asked to sing the national anthem instead to mark the occasion.
In an official statement, board’s general secretary Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, has said Muslim students at government schools must not be compelled to participate in the event and advised the Muslims not to take part in the ‘Surya Namaskar’ drill. ‘Surya Namaskar’ is a form of worship of the Sun. Islam and other minorities in India do not believe that Sun is a deity and do not approve of its worship. Hence the government must withdraw such instructions, the AIMPLB statement read.
“India is a secular, multi-religious and multi-cultural country. Our constitution has been drafted on the basis of these principles. The Constitution does not allow anyone to impart teachings of a particular religion in government educational institutions or to organise events based on the beliefs of a particular group,” the statement read.
The present government is deviating from the principles of secularism and trying to impose the ideology and tradition of the majority community on all sections of the country, the statement said. The board said instead of organising events like Surya Namaskar as a part of the Independence Day celebrations, students should be made to recite the national anthem in order to strengthen the feeling of patriotism in them.
The Centre has directed all district education officers to organise this Surya Namaskar drill. “This is unconstitutional and a false propaganda of patriotism,” the statement read.The board went on to ask the government to instead “focus on real issues like rising prices, unemployment and depreciation in value of Indian rupee”.
The statement concluded with an advice that Muslim students are not permittedto take part in events like Surya Namaskar and must avoid participating in any such exercise.
