CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu BJP unit has been making elaborate arrangements to celebrate ‘Modi Pongal’ in Madurai on January 12 to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is coming to the state to inaugurate government medical colleges.
The state unit aims at impressing the party leader and boosting the morale of the functionaries by organising various programmes during Modi’s visit. In a statement, party state president K Annamalai said the PM would participate in the Modi Pongal.
The state chief has constituted a 12-member committee for making arrangements for the programme. State general secretary Karu Nagarajan would head the committee. The party has also formed a ‘welcome committee’ under senior party functionary Rama Srinivasan to make arrangements.
The party has planned a series of special Pongal celebrations at party mandal level in the state as part of the celebration from January 7 . It would culminate in Madurai on January 12 where the PM is expected to participate, said Karu Nagarajan.
Folk artists would be roped in to add colour and flavour to the event.
“We are planning to bring at least 10,000 women to make pongal on the occasion. It will be a mega event in the state. The Modi Pongal festival is also aimed at boosting the morale of the party cadre ahead of the urban local body polls,” he added.
Union ministers were expected to participate in the programme.
